Google Analytics and Search Console for SEO

Google Search Console is a free service offered by Google that helps you monitor and troubleshoot your website’s appearance in the search results. It also allows you to submit your sitemap to Google, so they can crawl and index your site more effectively. 

In order to use Google Search Console, you’ll need to add and verify your website with Google.

Step 1: Create a Google Analytics account

The first step is to create a Google Analytics account. You can do this by going to the Google Analytics website.

Step 2: Get the tracking code

Once you’ve created your account, it’s time to get the tracking code for your website. The tracking code is a snippet of JavaScript that needs to be added to each page of your website. To get the tracking code, sign in to your Google Analytics account and click “Admin.” In the “Property” column, select the property for which you want to get the tracking code. Then, click “Tracking Info” and “Tracking Code.”

On the Tracking Code page, you’ll see a box containing the tracking code snippet. Copy this code and paste it into the <head> section of each page of your website. If you’re using a content management system (CMS) like WordPress or Drupal, there are plugins available that will handle this for you automatically. 

If you’re not comfortable adding code to your site yourself, or if you don’t have access to your site’s code, contact your web developer or hosting provider for help. They should be able to add the tracking code for you.

Step 3: Check that the tracking code is working properly

Once you’ve added the tracking code snippet to your site pages, it’s important to check that it’s working properly. The easiest way to do this is to use the Chrome extension GA Checker (for Chrome browsers only). Once GA Checker is installed, navigate to any page on your website and click the GA Checker icon in your browser bar. A popup window will appear showing whether or not the page has valid Google Analytics tracking code installed. 

If the page has valid tracking code installed, you’ll see a list of all of the tracker objects associated with that page (see image below). 

If GA Checker finds an error on the page, it will tell you what type of error it is and where on the page it occurred. You can then fix the error and re-check with GA Checker until all errors have been resolved.

How can I use Google Search Console for SEO?

There are a number of ways that you can use Google Search Console to improve your website’s SEO. Here are just a few of the most important.

Monitoring Your Website’s Performance

One of the most important things you can do with Google Search Console is monitoring your website’s performance in the search results. The platform provides data on things like the average click-through rate (CTR) for your website, as well as the average position that your website appears in the search results. This data is incredibly valuable, as it can help you identify areas where your website needs improvement. 

For example, if you notice that your CTR is low, it could be an indication that your title tags and meta descriptions need to be tweaked. Alternatively, if you notice that your website’s average position is slipping, it could be an indication that you need to start producing more high-quality content. Either way, monitoring your website’s performance in the search results is a great way to identify areas where you need to make changes in order to improve your SEO. 

Identifying Technical Issues

In addition to monitoring your website’s performance, another important thing that you can do with Google Search Console is identify technical issues that could be negatively impacting your SEO efforts. For example, if there are broken links on your site, or if Google isn’t indexing all of the pages on your site, those are both problems that need to be fixed ASAP. Fortunately, Google Search Console makes it easy to identify these technical issues so that they can be fixed quickly and easily.
